I started my first practical lesson 1.01 on 3 May 2023
Attire throughout practical 1.01 - 1.03 :
1) Long pants
2) Long sleeve shirt or arm sleeves (shopee!)
3) Fully covered gloves ( you can get them from decathlon)
4) Covered shoes and socks
5) Knee pad and Elbow guards provided by BBDC
6) Helmet liner (provided by BBDC)
Practical 1.01
Alright I started this lesson on 10 May 2023. So for my first practical lesson was basically all about fundamentals of the motorcycle. Learning from how to do your daily checks of the bike to riding it around the mini circuit.
First they will teach you how to kick down the bike off by rocking the bike back and forth and on of its main stand by stepping onto the main stand while pulling the bike towards you. (you may have to use your whole body weight). Following that will be the riding posture.
Next will be turning the motorcycle on by switching on the key. This is where you will do your bike checks
Bike checks :
1) Checking the horn
2) Brake lights
3) Signal Lights
The instructor will then teach you how to use the clutch to move off the bike and how to stop smoothly. They will face you to the wall with tyres to brake into and have you move the bike with the clutch by releasing it gradually till it is at its "biting point" and hold it at the position. This is called "half clutch". Before braking, you will have to pull in the clutch in fast, else the bike will stall, but don't worry.
Tip: Use the rear and front brake at the same time to ensure smooth braking. The front brake is really sensitive so use the rear brake more.
When everyone gets the hang of it, the instructor will bring you guys around the mini circuit using half clutch and stopping at every round smoothly. I neglected my rear brake a lot and use most of the front brake. Take this time to also practice on your riding posture such as feet pointing straight, knees gripping the fuel tank. It will be an advantage to practice these good habits.
Overall the lesson was really fun and I enjoyed myself a lot and managed to pass it on the first try!😀
Remember to quickly book your next lesson!
Practical 1.02
For this lesson, we will be learning how to shift gears and will be going up to gear 2. The instructor let us warm up around the mini circuit and then brought us out to the main circuit to go rounds. We had to keep to the left lane and no overtaking yet.
So our instructor taught us how to shift gears. First we will have to increase the RPM of the bike by throttling in gear 1. Once you gain enough speed, clutch in quickly, close the throttle, and kick up the gear to gear 2, and slowly release the clutch all in 1 swift motion to be smooth, else you will jerk around.
After a round, you will have to stop behind a cone the instructor has placed. When you are halfway through and about to reach the stop line, clutch in fast, close throttle, kick down the gear to gear 1, apply brakes slowly and gradually release the clutch. Changing the gear down to slow down is called engine braking and you will be using it a lot for the subsequent lessons.
I also passed the lesson on the first try!!! and it was really fun to go around the main circuit at a faster speed where you can feel the wind blowing through your face!😆
Practical 1.03
Alright so this was one hell of a lesson. First attempt on 17 May and 2nd on 24 May. I suffered so much...The objectives of this lesson is slow speed control and 1.5m moving and stopping.
Tip for this lesson is to clutch in fast first, followed by closing throttle. Depend more on your rear brake and less on your front brake and grip the fuel tank tightly,
The instructor will let you warm up around the main circuit. You will then have to bring the bike up to gear 5 and kick the gear down by 2 gears whenever negotiating bends, bring it back up and then kick it back down to apply engine braking and stopping smoothly using your rear brake and a bit of your front.
To negotiate bends, while your half way through the road before reaching the bend in gear 5, Close the throttle, Brake slightly to slow down, clutch in fast, kick down the gear by 2, slowly release the clutch, release the brake and throttle on. You can remember this by "ABCDCBA"
Close Accelerator (Throttle), Brake, Pull in Clutch, Down Gear, Release Clutch, Release Brake, Accelerate (Throttle).
Next when you complete 1 round, you will have to slowly kick down the gears 1 by 1 back to gear 1 to apply engine braking, clutch in fast, close throttle, and brake slowly.
Next will be the slow speed control where the instructor will place 3 to 4 cones in front of you and you are supposed to move and stop SMOOTHLY after each cone. First you will have to throttle and put the bike at half clutch for the bike to move. Next, close the throttle and clutch in fast and be prepared to stop smoothly. Your left leg has to hang slightly above the ground as it is a short distance. Use more of the rear brakes!
Next is the 1.5m moving and stopping. This is exactly the same steps as the slow speed control except you have to out your left leg up, and when you're about to stop, left leg out and stop.
My instructor was really strict and I had to retake this lesson and passed it on my 2nd try
Total Damage: $308.36
Damage for Practical 1.01-1.03: $103.68
